Why the Mouth Matters: The Science Behind Oral Pouches and the Rise of Nicotine-Free Formats
TORONTO
Investor purpose
Why this event matters to the brand’s growth and portfolio strategy.
What happened
- Nicotine brands made the small oral pouch visible at scale. ZYN, On!, Rogue and VELO accounted for nearly all measured U.S. oral nicotine-pouch sales in a 2021–2024 study, while trade coverage in early 2026 identified energy pouches as an emerging active-nutrition format. The commercial question is no longer whether consumers understand a pouch placed between the gum and lip. It is what else the format can credibly deliver—and what evidence a brand needs before it says so.
- The buccal mucosa lines the inside of the cheek. It is one part of the oral mucosa, alongside areas including the sublingual tissue beneath the tongue and the gingiva around the teeth. Scientific literature has studied these tissues as delivery routes for tablets, films, sprays, lozenges, gum and other formulations. Their accessibility, blood supply and permeability can make the mouth useful for certain compounds without requiring inhalation.
- Controlled studies of oral nicotine pouches have measured nicotine entering the bloodstream after pouch use, with a slower time to peak concentration than cigarette smoking. Laboratory research has also found that pH, artificial-saliva composition and product formulation can change nicotine release and permeation through buccal-mucosa models. Together, this supports the credibility of the mouth as a delivery route and shows why the formulation—not only the pouch—matters.
- In January 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the marketing of 20 specific ZYN nicotine-pouch products after scientific review. The agency emphasized that its decision applied only to those named products and did not authorize other nicotine pouches or reduced-risk claims. That distinction is commercially important: category legitimacy does not transfer regulatory authorization or substantiation from one product to another.
- WAKE uses the pouch format in an action-sports and lifestyle context. PULSE applies it to performance-focused consumers and competitive communities. ALRT organizes its proposition around first responders and shift-based work. All three are nicotine-free, but their audiences, product decisions, evidence requirements and commercial routes are not interchangeable.
Why it matters commercially
The established pouch format lowers consumer-education friction, while WPG’s opportunity depends on building differentiated nicotine-free products with defensible formulation, compliance and repeat-purchase economics.
